Z hotels Bath is located on the site of the former ‘Lyric Theatre’ that opened in 1895. The hotel fit out is part of a bigger redevelopment scheme for the Saw Close in Bath, which incorporates a casino, restaurants, shops and the hotel.
The adaptive reuse is a general strategy when Z Hotels are concerned. However, the Z Bath is an exception. The building was handed to us in a Shell & Core stage, and no strip out works were involved, which eased the construction process.
The hotel consists of 150 bedrooms with a lobby and the Café area. The property is accessed from the old theatre’s Grade II-listed frontage. The Café and the reception area occupy part of the ground floor level belonging to the former theatre and the bedrooms are placed within a new building and spread across four levels, including the ground floor.
The design scheme is based on the Z Hotels’ new concept of a hotel focused on delivering a high-quality product, accessible to all, through the efficient use of space. Bedrooms are designed with an area approx. 10 sq. metres with ensuite, catered for guests taking frequent but shorter stays.
Our strategy for the 75-square-metre café was bringing back part of the theatre´s former glory, breaking the rectangular shape of the space, and compensating for the lack of natural light. As a reminiscent of the Victorian age, the colour palette is dark and consists of deep blue, mahogany and various shades of grey.
All the furniture pieces were designed in the office and made in England with local craftsmen and suppliers. The big luminaire, on top of the communal table, was designed by us and the contractor to bring a natural light effect in the interior of the Café.
Z Hotels Bath está ubicado en el lugar del antiguo “Lyric Theatre” que se inauguró en 1895. El equipamiento del hotel es parte de un plan más amplio para remodelar Saw Close en Bath, que incluye un casino, restaurantes, tiendas y el hotel.
El enfoque de este desarrollo fue diferente al de los Z Hotels construidos posteriormente, ya que no se involucraron obras de desmontaje. El edificio nos fue entregado en una etapa Shell & Core, lo que facilitó el proceso de construcción.
El hotel consta de 150 habitaciones y una zona de cafetería. Se accede a la propiedad desde la fachada del antiguo teatro catalogado como Grado II, el Café y la recepción ocupan parte de la planta baja del antiguo teatro y las habitaciones están ubicadas dentro de un nuevo edificio y se distribuyen en cuatro niveles, incluida la planta baja.
El esquema de diseño se basa en el nuevo concepto de hotel de Z Hotels centrado en ofrecer un producto de alta calidad, accesible para todos, mediante el uso eficiente del espacio. Las habitaciones están diseñadas con un área de aprox. 10 metros cuadrados con baño, para huéspedes que realizan estancias frecuentes pero más cortas.
Nuestro objetivo para el café de 75 metros cuadrados era devolver parte de la gloria del teatro al espacio y romper la forma rectangular del espacio, debido a su longitud y falta de luz natural. Como reminiscencia victoriana, la paleta de colores es oscura y consta de azul profundo, caoba y tonos de gris.
El diseño del Café practica la “armonía por contraste” para generar capas y niveles de profundidad en un espacio muy definido. Utilizando solo dos materiales, Nymbus & Cemento, para las encimeras, las mesas y el suelo, se crea un fondo secundario en esta nueva etapa donde la banqueta azul ondulante se convierte en el protagonista principal del espectáculo. Por lo tanto, los muebles y las luces son las características principales de este Café, las superficies en todo el café se han mantenido simples.
Todos los muebles fueron diseñados en la oficina y hechos en Inglaterra con proveedores y artesanos locales. La gran luminaria, sobre la mesa común, fue diseñada por nosotros y el contratista para traer un efecto de luz natural en el interior del Café.
